Finding Black

Well, trying at least.  My greatest weekness when it comes to inking is finding the blacks.  And as anyone who’s inked anything knows it’s like a Doctor saying his biggest weekness is anatomy.  It’s kind of a mortal fault.  So…  I struggle to find black.

I have recently become acquainted with Jeff Smith and Bone. I’ve known of it since around it’s beginning but as I’ve mentioned before I rarely read comics or anything other than articles for that matter. (another major fault!)  Anyways here is the page I was looking at while working on this.

There are some great concepts in the way he places blacks.  He manages to somehow use some very heavy black while maintaining a perfect balance as well as an incredibly airy feel.  And so I struggle…

No Panel Page

July 29, 2009

Trying out a test page for Punch Hug.  I’ve been looking at Craig Thompson’s Blog and his upcoming book Habibi. He works without panels a lot letting the forms in his illustrations break up the page. This was a super quick page as I’m sure you can tell.  I spent about 2 hours drawing inking and coloring.  So forgive the mistakes?  Meh.  it was a test and moderately successful… still have to figure out black….
